Report: Premier League will block Tottenham’s attempt to sign goalkeeper

The Daily Mail have revealed that the Premier League will not provide permission for Tottenham to sign Ben Foster as temporary goalkeeping cover.

Spurs learned last week that they will be without Hugo Lloris for six to eight weeks after their captain injured his knee ligaments in the win over Manchester City (Telegraph).

That leaves Antonio Conte with Fraser Forster as his only senior goalkeeper, with academy graduate Brandon Austin being named on the bench at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

The Mirror reported last week that Spurs may look to snap up Ben Foster on a short-term deal as temporary goalkeeping cover.

The Mail have now explained that Antonio Conte’s men did explore the possibility of signing the former Watford number one but they have now been informed that such a move would be blocked by the Premier League.

While clubs are allowed to register players outside of the transfer window in certain circumstances, they reportedly require special dispensation to do so.

The Mail states that Spurs have learned that a signing will not be cleared by the Premier League under their current rules, which has thwarted their plans to lure Foster out of retirement.

Some of the other occasions where such a signing has been allowed are when two goalkeepers have been injured.

So, perhaps the Premier League will only give the green light for Spurs to sign Forster or any other goalkeeper if they lose Fraser Forster due to suspension or injury.

This is far from ideal for the Lilywhites as Conte will not want to rely on Austin or Whiteman in big Premier League or Champions League matches.
