Report reveals when James Maddison is expected to return to Spurs action

The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham are hopeful that James Maddison could return to action by the end of this month.

Maddison has been sidelined with an ankle injury from the start of November and in the attacking midfielder’s absence, the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Giovani Lo Celso have stepped up impressively to fill the creative void.

However, Ange Postecoglou would be hoping to have the England international back as soon as possible as he possesses attributes that no one else in the Spurs squad does.

Maddison could return for Tottenham in weeks

The Athletic have now shed light on Maddison’s return date while discussing who will be handed the captain’s armband after Son Heung-min’s departure to the Asian Cup.

The report claims that the hope at Hotspur Way is that both of the club’s vice-captains, Maddison and Cristian Romero, will be back on the pitch before the end of January.

The outlet points out that Ben Davies is the obvious choice for captain in the meantime, with the Welshman having worn the armband in the Carabao Cup clash against Fulham back in August.

However, the publication suggests that Guglielmo Vicario might be an outside contender for the captaincy, given that the goalkeeper is a guaranteed starter and has showcased his leadership qualities since arriving at the club.

The swift return to action of Rodrigo Bentancur would perhaps give Spurs fans hope that the likes of Maddison and Romero could also return to action sooner than anticipated.

However, there is certainly no need for Tottenham to rush the 27-year-old back, given how well Lo Celso is playing at the moment.
