Report: Spurs expressed an interest in Man United midfielder this summer

The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur expressed interest in a deal for Mason Mount this summer ahead of his switch to Manchester United.

Spurs have already secured an attacking midfielder in the form of James Maddison, reportedly striking a £40m deal with Leicester City for the 26-year-old.

Tottenham looked at Mason Mount this summer

According to The Athletic’s update, it turns out that the Lilywhites also had their eye on another homegrown number eight, who like Maddison, also had just one year left on his contract.

The player in question is Mount, with the report stating that the former Chelsea man was one of the options on Tottenham’s radar this summer.

It is explained that Manchester City and Newcastle United were also eyeing the 24-year-old while Arsenal and Liverpool even held talks with Chelsea regarding a move.

However, it is Manchester United who won the race for Mount, who completed a £55m switch to Old Trafford earlier this week, with The Athletic suggesting that a switch to the Red Devils was the England international’s top choice.

Spurs Web Opinion

Mount was undoubtedly the best number eight on the market this summer but he was never a realistic target for us, given that we are not in the Champions League.

In a way, Spurs are lucky that Mount was on the market this summer.

Otherwise, the likes of Manchester United might have entered the race for Maddison, thus making Tottneham’s pursuit of the 26-year-old a lot harder.
