Report: Spurs hold a ‘great interest’ in signing Bundesliga defender

Tottenham Hotspur may have already signed two new centre-backs in the last year, but they want more, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah could well be on his way to North London this summer according to the latest reports out of Germany.

Rewind to a year ago, and Tottenham were struggling defensively and in desperate need of new centre-backs, with only Cristian Romero truly deemed worthy of a spot in the team.

Now, with the acquisitions of Micky van de Ven and, more recently, Radu Dragusin, the Lilywhites have far more strength in depth in the centre of defence.

However, there is still thought to be a desire to add one more centre-half to the roster at Tottenham, and Jonathan Tah is a player the club has certainly looked at previously (Kicker). Fellow London sides Chelsea and West Ham are also thought to be keen on the 28-year-old (CaughtOffside).

Spurs are very interested in Jonathan Tah

According to the latest from BILD Sport (via Sport Witness), Spurs are circling for Tah once more, and they have a great opportunity to snap him up in the summer thanks to a release clause that becomes active at the end of this season.

It is thought Tottenham hold a “great interest” in Tah, but so do several other clubs, largely because Leverkusen will be vulnerable to an €18m (£15.4m) release clause this summer.

Despite interest from Bayern Munich, it is believed the player is more interested in a move to the Premier League this summer. This reportedly gives Spurs a “great chance” of signing the German defender, but there is a catch.

Apparently, Tah will only sign for a club playing Champions League football next season, so a lot will depend on the final standings in the Premier League table this year.

Tah could actually be a perfect fourth centre-back to add to our options, as he brings a bit more experience than the current crop of players. With Dragusin and van de Ven already being so young, going for an older head now to balance it out may be the best approach.
