Report: Spurs weigh up improved midfielder bid with Ligue 1 striker also of interest

An initial bid of £20 million plus Giovanni Lo Celso for Jacob Ramsey was rejected by Aston Villa, but Spurs are reportedly set to return.

Tottenham like Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey

Villa academy product, Jacob Ramsey, is evidently someone who Tottenham are seeking to sign this summer. The 23-year-old has featured for The Villains 122 times, chipping in with 13 goals and 12 assists across the five years since his debut. (TransferMarkt)

Giovanni Lo Celso is reportedly a player of interest for Aston Villa, with The Sun reporting in early June that Tottenham are looking to sell the Argentine and that ‘Unami Emery is a big fan of Lo Celso’ with the former Arsenal boss having coached Lo Celso when during his loan period at Villarreal

It appears Spurs have used that interest as leverage to reduce the cash involved in a deal to sign Ramsey, offering the former Real Betis midfielder plus £20 million, although The Standard reports it was rejected.

The same report is now claiming Spurs are ‘weighing up’ whether to submit an improved offer in an attempt to tempt Villa into letting the attacking midfielder go.

Interest in Ramsey has been reported by Football.London to be ‘driven by’ the player’s former, and now Tottenham’s, sporting director, Johan Lange. The pursuit is likely to be a time-sensitive, opportunistic one with Villa possibly being ‘under pressure’ of FFP rules which need to be met by June 30th.

The Standard’s report suggests Aston Villa value Ramsey ‘between £40 and £50 million’.

Jonathan David is ‘of interest’ to Tottenham

Further reporting from The Standard on Thursday (27/6/24) confirmed that ‘Spurs are also in the market for a centre-forward this summer’, citing Lille’s Jonathan David as ‘among the players of interest’.

The New York-born striker, who has already scored in Canada’s opening game of the Copa America, has been frequently linked as an option to aid Tottenham’s goalscoring output, with his 58 goals in the last three Ligue 1 seasons proving his pedigree. (TransferMarkt)

Football.London reported Spurs’ interest in David on Monday (24/6/24) claiming he was ‘high on the list’ of potential striker signings with reports eluding to the 24-year-old’s price tag being around ‘£25 million’ due to his contract expiring next year.

Spurs Web Opinion

Utilising Villa’s desperation to fulfil profit and sustainability regulations in order to strike a cut-price deal for Ramsey could be astute business, but the club should be disciplined and not pay the prices that Emery’s side are quoting in my opinion.

I would also prefer to see Eberechi Eze signed over Ramsey if it is the case that it’s one or the other.

Signing a new striker this summer is key I believe, Richarlison proved he can score goals in a Spurs shirt last season, but another injury-scattered campaign would lead me to demand another striker who can consistently score goals.
