Lo Celso’s Tottenham future remains unclear

Rumours of Giovanni Lo Celso leaving the club started to swirl around in April, with Spanish news outlets claiming the midfielder could possibly return to the club Tottenham brought him from, Real Betis.

It was stated that Lo Celso has ‘maintained contacts with the leaders of the club’ and would ‘be willing to return if they give them [Real Betis] the right conditions’ (Estadio Deportivo).

Manager, Ange Postecoglou, had his say in a press conference also in April of this year, claiming that Lo Celso ‘has been good for us’ although admitting there have been ‘injury disruptions’, further adding ‘if it is not Gio, someone else will have to play that role. No one will play every game. It doesn’t happen’ (Football.London).

Postecoglou’s closing statement that’s quoted above doesn’t exactly sound as if the Australian will be willing to go to great lengths to keep the 28-year-old.

This was reflected by a Football Insider report that claims ‘Tottenham have told Lo Celso he is free to find a new club this summer’ with Spurs willing to accept a ‘cut-price fee’ due to the player’s current deal expiring next summer (Football.Insider).

Tottenham are not giving Lo Celso ‘the continuity he deserves’

Argentinian media outlet, Olé, published a feature piece on Lo Celso with the piece stating that ‘his ability to play, to know how to play and make play is valued’, later going on to praise the Tottenham midfielder who has ‘one of the most appearances’ under World Cup winning manager, Lionel Scaloni (Olé).

Lo Celso hasn’t enjoyed as much game time at club level, however, experiencing only 494 league minutes this season (TransferMarkt).

Olé were critical of Spurs’ reluctancy to use Lo Celso in their feature, claiming that he ‘does not have the continuity that he deserves’ at Tottenham.

Fans will be quick to point at his injury record as an explanation for the lack of continuity however, with Giovanni missing 14 games this season due to injury which is worryingly one of his better injury records for a season in his time at Spurs (TransferMarkt).

In La Albiceleste’s famous blue and white stripes, Lo Celso has a record of shining in. It was a blow to him and his nation that he suffered an injury that meant he couldn’t play in the team’s recent World Cup victory.

However, now he is back in the fold and bidding for Copa America success, clearly enjoying the opportunity to play on one of the biggest stages, explaining to Ole that ‘wearing these colours is priceless’.

Lo Celso has now racked up 53 caps for his country, netting 3 times as well as assisting 14 goals. (TransferMarkt)

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s undeniable that Lo Celso possesses plenty of talent, with Spurs fans often harking back to the now 28-year-old’s impressive debut campaign for the club which made the board inclined to purchase the player permanently.

However, since then it’s been a story of frustration and tension between Lo Celso and Spurs with the player frequently being sent out on loans as well as enduring plenty of injuries which have made him unavailable for the majority of his Tottenham career.

Lo Celso performing at the Copa America and impressing for his country should be news that is welcomed by Tottenham fans with it only meaning the former PSG midfielder drives up his value for a potential summer sale or finds some form for the upcoming season.
