Report: Tottenham player is now travelling to Spain to complete transfer

Dan Kilpatrick has revealed on The Standard’s live transfer blog that Alejo Veliz is now travelling to Spain to complete a loan switch to Sevilla.

Veliz has made eight appearances for Tottenham since arriving from Rosario Central last summer, scoring one goal, but the 20-year-old is yet to make a single start for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt).

The youngster got his opportunities owing to the injury crisis Ange Postecoglou’s men were dealing with over recent months and his chances of getting game time at Spurs seemed quite slim in the second half of the season, particularly since Timo Werner has also joined the club.

That is perhaps why Tottenham have decided to send the striker out on loan, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein being the first to report on Wednesday that Sevilla had expressed an interest in signing the youngster temporarily.

Alejo Veliz on his way to Sevilla

Kilpatrick has now revealed that the Argentine is travelling to Spain this morning to complete a medical and seal a loan move to Quique Sanchez Flores’ side until the end of the season.

The journalist confirms that the loan deal does not include an option to buy and that Sevilla have given Tottenham assurances that the striker would get regular game time at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

This is the right decision by Spurs as Veliz needs regular competitive football under his belt, which he was not going to get at Tottenham.

However, I do wonder if it would have been more beneficial to perhaps send the 20-year-old to an English club, even if it meant taking a step down to the Championship.

That would have helped him get used to the pace and intensity of the English game. Perhaps that is something Spurs will consider doing next summer.
