Report: Tottenham put player ‘immediately up for sale’ after poor loan spell

Djed Spence has returned to Tottenham Hotspur after his loan deal with Leeds United was ended early this week, and it would seem his parent club don’t want him either, with the young defender now available for transfer.

Signed in the summer of 2022, Djed Spence arrived at Tottenham with huge expectations after setting the Championship alight with Nottingham Forest the previous year. However, the youngster failed to impress Antonio Conte and made just six appearances for Spurs totalling roughly 41 minutes of action (Transfermarkt).

Spence would then spend the second half of the campaign on loan at French side Stade Rennais, where he again failed to set the world alight.

With new manager Ange Postecoglou coming in over the summer, many Spurs fans hoped Spence would be given a chance and that Conte had simply not fancied the player. However, the decision was made to loan Spence out again this season, with the 23-year-old joining Leeds.

Spurs put Djed Spence up for sale

An underwhelming spell in West Yorkshire was cut short this week as Leeds terminated the loan agreement and sent Spence back to Spurs having made just seven appearances in the first half of the season (Transfermarkt).

A report from the Daily Mail now sheds some light on why that decision may have been made, and what the future may hold for Spence.

The report cites Leeds boss Daniel Farke’s comments (via Joe Donnohue) about “values” and “expectations” as well as a mention of “professionalism and discipline” when discussing Spence and, although he did not openly criticise the player, it seems these could be contributing factors.

Spence may be back at Spurs now, but the report claims he may not be there for long. Apparently, Spence will be “available for transfer” this month amid “doubts” as to whether he has the right “attitude.”

Spence has so much talent, but there must be something to this idea that he isn’t bringing the right attitude and level of application to his game, because that is now four managers who have not taken to him.
