Report: Tottenham’s waiting game for centre-back could work in their favour

According to the print edition of Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham’s decision to play the waiting game for Clement Lenglet could now be vindicated as the North London club may now push through a favourable deal for the Frenchman.

The report states that the Nou Camp hierarchy want Lenglet sold by the end of this week and are even ready to consider loaning out the centre-back with an obligatory purchase option if they are not able to agree on a straight sale.

It is explained that the talks over the defender’s future had been temporarily paused during Barca’s pre-season tour in the United States but they are now expected to resume, with Spurs still remaining the favourites to land the 28-year-old.

Tottenham hold the cards in Clement Lenglet race

The outlet reveals that Tottenham’s initial idea was to pay a ‘symbolic amount’ for Lenglet and cover the player’s wages while the Catalan club demanded €15m (£12.8m) for his departure.

However, with Barca now in a hurry to sell the centre-back, his departure could now be just ‘a matter of days’.

It is alleged that Spurs have a big advantage on their hands and that their patience could help them land a deal on their terms.

Given that no other club appears prepared to match Lenglet’s current salary, Tottenham were always in the driving seat, knowing that the pressure would mount on Barca to lower their asking price as the transfer window went on.
