‘Right profile’ – Postecoglou dicusses what he is looking for in a new Spurs centre-back

In his latest press conference ahead of the fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion tomorrow, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has been looking ahead to the January transfer window, taking time to detail what he wants from a new centre-back.

The festive period has been kind to Tottenham, with the Lilywhites picking up ten points from a possible 15 throughout December. Ange Postecoglou could make it four wins in a row if his side can overcome Brighton at the Amex Stadium tomorrow.

Spurs appeared to be out of the race for the top four last month, after going five games without a win, but have now found themselves right back in the mix among the top teams in the Premier League.

Postecoglou talks about finding a new centre-back

With Micky van de Ven still out injured, and Cristian Romero the latest addition to Tottenham’s long term injury list, Postecoglou’s need for a new centre-back in the January transfer window is greater than ever if they hope to keep up that challenge at the top.

Discussing what lies ahead for Spurs, Postecoglou went into detail with the press (via Football.London) about what his approach is to finding that centre-back to bolster his squad.

He said: “I don’t put as much stock into the left-sided or right-sided centre-back scenario, we just need another player in that position who can provide some more depth for us and the ability to change it up. It won’t matter if it is left-sided or right-sided, it is more the profile and characteristics.

“We didn’t go looking for a left-sided centre-back at the start of the year, it just happened that Micky was the perfect centre-back. Even if we had another left-sided one, I still would have signed him. It is about looking at the right profile, the right characteristics and seeing what is available, then going from there.”

We knew signing a new centre-back was important ahead of next month, but it’s now absolutely crucial that Postecoglou and the board get this sorted immediately. We cannot go through the whole month waiting for the arrival of a top centre-back.
