Rodrigo Bentancur throws bottles at fans

Uruguay were defeated 1-0 by Colombia in Wednesday night’s semi-final in Charlotte, USA, and just minutes after the final whistle blew on the game, chaos ensued.

Covered by the Daily Mail today, footage has emerged of Tottenham midfielder, Rodrigo Bentancur, throwing bottles into the crowd as the brawl broke out.

Bentancur threw two bottles at Colombian supporters, with one hitting a member of the Uruguay coaching staff who had climbed into the crowd.

The 27-year-old was then ushered away from the trouble by staff. Another Premier League player, Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, was at the heart of the fracas, too, and even climbed into the crowd himself and appears to have thrown punches at supporters.

On the situation, Uruguay defender Jose Gimenez said: “This is an embarrassment, there wasn’t one police officer to control them. We had to go and defend our own just because they can’t control their drinking.”

Gimenez claimed the families of the Uruguay players were “avalanched” by Colombia fans.

Bentancur is on thin ice

It’s been a tumultuous summer already for Bentancur. He ended the season by kicking a chair on the sub’s bench for Spurs, before being embroiled in a racial controversy after comments made about his club captain, Heung-min Son.

It remains to be seen what repercussions this latest incident will bring for the Spurs man.

Spurs Web Opinion

I don’t know what is going on with Bentancur right now, but he needs to sort this out.

He’s a top quality player on his day, but the way he’s behaving has left me really unsure as to whether he’s a player we want in our squad.
