The Athletic have ranked every Premier League club’s summer business, but Tottenham Hotspur supporters may not be too pleased with where their club has ended up.
The Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy certainly seem to have delivered on their promise of a ‘big summer’, with the club spending £334m on 10 new signings to make it the most expensive transfer window in their history.
There has understandably been plenty of attention on that figure, particularly given Tottenham never came close to spending that kind of money under Daniel Levy.
What has received less attention, though, is how well Spurs have also done when it comes to moving players on, with the club raising £158m from sales and leaving their net spend at £176m, according to Sky Sports.
The spending itself is only part of the picture, too. Tottenham have improved the quality of their squad across multiple areas of the pitch, something that was desperately needed after they narrowly avoided relegation last season.
As expected, supporters have largely reacted positively to the summer’s work, but not everyone is quite as convinced, though.
The Athletic rank Tottenham Hotspur 10th in Premier League
With the summer transfer window for Premier League clubs now closed, The Athletic have ranked each club’s business and placed Tottenham in 10th, one place above north London rivals Arsenal in 11th.
Explaining the ranking, The Athletic’s Nick Miller wrote:
“For those of us old enough to remember the Daniel Levy era, Tottenham spending north of £300m on 10 players in a single transfer window is quite disorienting.
“They have clearly enhanced parts of their squad, with Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke surely more reliable than Cristian Romero, Sandro Tonali and Matheus Fernandes obvious upgrades in midfield and the double swoop from Manchester City, Omar Marmoush and Savio, also potentially pretty exciting.
“And yet, you’re also left with a nagging sense that despite having spent a quarter of the cost of their stadium, they’re still left without a reliable goalkeeper or centre-forward.
“Plus, the signing of Mykhailo Mudryk feels a bit weird, as does selling Kevin Danso and replacing him with Tosin Adarabioyo.”
Where Tottenham Hotspur rank for spending and net spend
Tottenham were also among the biggest spenders in the Premier League this summer; the third-highest amount in the division, with only Manchester City at £440.3m and Chelsea at £342.4m spending more.
Their net spend is also among the Premier League’s highest, with Tottenham sitting third behind Liverpool’s £219.4m and Ipswich Town’s £190.7m.
