Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie is labelled a ‘big player’ by Serie A centre-back

Udinese centre-back James Abankwah has labelled Destiny Udogie a ‘big player’ after the left-back scored in his first appearance for Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

Udogie played the second half of Spurs‘ pre-season friendly against West Ham United, with Ange Postecoglou choosing to field two different elevens in either period.

The 20-year-old’s display gave Tottenham fans plenty of reasons to get excited, seemingly adapting quite well to the demands of the inverted full-back role.

That is not a role that Udogie is used to, having almost exclusively featured as a wing-back since breaking into Udinese’s starting eleven two years ago.

However, Postecoglou would have been delighted with what he saw from the Italy Under-21 international, who also got on the scoresheet with a well-directed header from Ivan Perisic’s corner kick.

After the game, the Tottenham man took to Instagram to post a message that read: “Delighted to play my first game and score my first goal for this club. Let’s keep working.’

Destiny Udogie is tipped as a ‘big player’ already

Abankwah was one of those to respond to the post, simply describing his former teammate as a ‘big player’. Tottenham’s new goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario also responded to his compatriot’s post with a fire and a heart-eyes emoji.

It is still early days for Udogie but he showed against the Hammers that he has the tactical intelligence needed to adapt to the inverted full-back role.

The youngster would only get better as he becomes more accustomed to the position over the course of pre-season.
