Troy Deeney explains why Spurs will be able to ‘attract a lot of players’ this summer

Troy Deeney believes that a lot of players around Europe will be lining up to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, having witnessed the freedom with which Ange Postecoglou’s men play this season.

Tottenham fans had grown weary of the counter-attacking approach employed by their previous three managers over the last few years and one of Postecoglou’s remits when he arrived at the club last summer was to implement a more eye-catching style of football.

The Australian has certainly delivered on that count, with Spurs being one of the most exciting sides to watch across the division this season, even for many neutrals.

The kind of bravery that the Lilywhites play with was encapsulated by the way they committed bodies forward in the second half against Nottingham Forest, with two defenders, Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro, getting on the scoresheet.

Deeney pointed out that both Porro and the other full-back Destiny Udogie were in the box for Tottenham’s third goal, suggesting that it is the measure of the freedom that Postecoglou has given his players.

The former Watford man said BBC Match of the Day: “This is Ange football.

“They get everybody in the box, even at 2-1 you think just see it out, but James Maddison is breaking away and you can see as this develops now the holding midfield player in Bentancur comes in now, and then just behind are the left-back and the right-back right next to the striker.

“It’s a hell of a hit from Porro. But there’s been such a change in mentality, youthfulness and the way they are going after people is like ‘right Spurs are here to stay’. The change they have done in this short six or seven months has put them ahead of United and many other teams.

“It’s exciting to watch and that’s what Spurs’ brand of football has historically been all about. I think with this manager, they will attract a lot of players.

“Even now we are saying we want to play for someone like that. As a defender, you are saying oh I will get a chance to score here. So I think they have a wonderful opportunity.”

Tottenham would be a particularly attractive destination for young, up-and-coming players as many would have seen the kind of trust Ange has put in the likes of Udogie and Sarr, and the way they have thrived. That was perhaps the same reason why Lucas Bergvall opted to sign for the Lilywhites above other suitors.
