Clive Allen has admitted that he had a lot of doubts about Guglielmo Vicario at the start of the season but remarked that the Italian has proven him wrong with the way he has stepped up.
Vicario was a relative unknown to Premier League fans when Tottenham signed him from Empoli in the summer.
Given that even some high-profile goalkeepers have struggled to adapt to the demands of the English top-flight over the last decade, some would have understandably been a little sceptical of the Italian.
The 27-year-old certainly did not pull up any trees in pre-season, which only further increased doubts about the signing.
However, Vicario has not put a foot wrong since the start of the season, having made a number of crucial saves. The former Empoli man has also been steady with the ball at his feet and proved that he has shown excellent judgement.

Allen admitted that he has been mightily impressed by the Spurs number one’s shot-stopping as well as his starting positions.
He told talkSPORT on Monday morning (11/12/23): “I wasn’t convinced at the start I have to say, there was just a little bit of unease in the way that he started. But I think he’s grown in confidence, he’s commanding his penalty box which you always need in a goalkeeper.
“He backs the back line up really well and everybody talks about how Spurs play this high line, his starting positions are very good. And his shot-stopping has been second-to-none, so he really has been a massive find I have to say.”

Apart from being an outstanding goalkeeper, Vicario is also very evidently a natural leader, with the Italian constantly shouting instructions at his defenders. We really have hit the jackpot with the 27-year-old.
