‘Wasn’t enough’ – Ange Postecoglou shares disappointment at FA Cup exit

Tottenham Hotspur crashed out of the FA Cup last night with a narrow defeat to current holders Manchester City, but while Ange Postecoglou may be disappointed, he has admitted his side simply didn’t do ‘enough’ to progress.

With time running out and the score standing at 0-0, it looked as though Manchester City had once again been foiled at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite the visitors dominance through the game, City missed good chances and the tie appeared to be heading for a replay.

That is until Kevin De Bruyne floated in a corner in the 88th minute and, with the ball bouncing around in the six-yard box, Nathan Ake poked home the winning goal and sent City through to the next round of the FA Cup.

However, there was some controversy over the goal, with Guglielmo Vicario alleging he was fouled by Ruben Dias in the build up. Indeed, it did appear the City defender jumped into the Spurs goalkeeper as the ball came in, but VAR adjudged there to be no foul.

Postecoglou admits Spurs were hanging in the game

A defeat so late on is never an easy pill to swallow, but Ange Postecoglou was rather gracious in his post-match press conference (via Football.London).

On the late goal, Postecoglou said: “I guess that aspect is disappointing. It happened so late and it doesn’t give you a chance to recover from it. We fought hard to stay in the game but to be honest that’s all we did, we stayed in the game. That wasn’t enough tonight to get us over the line.”

And, when pressed about the VAR decision to award that goal, he added: “Well, the referee has had a good look at it and VAR has had a good look at it and they’ve decided otherwise so we have accept that.”

He’s right that we didn’t do enough to ever look like taking the game, and it’s really disappointing to be out of the cup in such a manner. That said, it was definitely a foul on the keeper, at least based on recent precedence in the same situation.
