‘When I got the call’ – Forward explains why he wanted to return to Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are keeping hold of Timo Werner for another season after extending his loan spell, but why does the German international like Spurs so much?

Werner was one of three signings in the January transfer market for Spurs, with the German winger joining on a six-month loan deal from RB Leipzig.

There was an option to buy clause in that particular agreement that would have seen Werner join Tottenham permanently for around £15m, but the Lilywhites didn’t trigger that option.

Instead, Spurs announced a new loan agreement for Werner that will see him remain at the club for the 2024/25 season, with a slightly lower option to buy.

Timo Werner really wanted to return to Tottenham

When asked why he wanted to return to Tottenham for an additional 12 months, the former Chelsea man revealed a phone call from Ange Postecoglou helped to seal the deal.

He said (Tottenham): “I see how good the club is, how good we are as a team and also, my perspective in the team, it makes it a really good place to stay.

“When I got the call from the manager, it was clear for me that he is a person who is 100 per cent behind you if he wants you and that was, for me, in this moment, the most important thing.

“Also, the idea how he wanted to play and how he explained it to me fits very well with me. The players are all very kind, so that made it easy for me. I feel very good here. I like it a lot.”

By all accounts, Tottenham will be signing another winger and possibly a striker this summer. If true, then keeping Werner around on a loan deal as a squad player is by no means a bad decision.
