It has become a running joke among Tottenham fans that the team may never get another penalty, but the reality is far from funny.
The last few days have been dominated by debates over whether VAR should have ruled out Neco Williams’ goal against Spurs due to a handball on the line.
This is despite incontrovertible evidence showing that the Forest star did handle the ball before it went into the back of the net.
However, this has not stopped pundits from suggesting that Forest’s goal against Spurs should have stood, much to the consternation of Tottenham supporters.
Tottenham’s shocking penalty stat beggars belief
Spurs fans would already be aware that Tottenham have not been awarded a penalty since the 2024-25 season, having gone the entirety of last campaign without a single spot-kick.
This came on the final day of the season, as Dominic Solanke converted in the 17th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Mathys Tel was fouled in the box by Brighton’s Mats Wieffer.
It has now been revealed that Spurs have not been awarded a penalty in an away Premier League match for nearly three and a half years.
According to The Sun’s Jake Sanders, the last penalty that the Lilywhites were awarded away from home was in May 2023, over 1200 days ago.
Harry Kane was the man who won and scored the penalty as Spurs fell to a 2-1 defeat at Villa Park on May 13, 2023.
Omar Marmoush’s penalty shout should have received more media attention
What has frustrated many Spurs fans is the amount of media attention given to what was demonstrably a right decision by VAR to rule out Williams’ goal.
In stark contrast, the incident involving Omar Marmoush and Malick Thiaw during Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Tottenham was hardly spoken about.
The Egyptian clearly got to the ball first and was caught by the Magpies defender, but the referee waved away the shouts for a spot-kick, with VAR choosing not to intervene.
With the incident occurring at the start of the second half when the score was still 0-0, a penalty for Tottenham could have had a massive influence on the result.
